WHO:
Davenport House Museum, an award-winning house museum operated by Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF). Originally built by master carpenter Isaiah Davenport in 1820, this historic Federal-style home overlooking Columbia Square, was saved from demolition by seven brave women in 1955, resulting in the founding of Historic Savannah Foundation and the beginning of the modern-day preservation movement in Savannah, Ga.
WHAT:
Davenport House Museum Family Day: Historic Preservation. In honor of National Preservation Month, the Davenport House Museum invites local residents and visitors of all ages to dive into the world of historic preservation at a special interactive Family Day event, which is free and open to the public. From learning about historic materials to discovering how craftspeople repair and maintain older structures, this historic preservation-focused Family Day at the Davenport House Museum will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the work that protects Savannah’s historic buildings. Attendees will have the opportunity to step into the shoes of preservation professionals, explore traditional building techniques and try out skills used in restoration and conservation.
Event highlights include a window glazing demonstration by local preservation company Austin Historical and plaster shaping activities led by professionals from Leonard Preservation & Home Improvement LLC. Historic Preservation instructors from Savannah Technical College will also be on-hand to showcase historic brick-making procedures. Attendees can also enjoy complimentary treats provided by Bryd’s Famous Cookies and refreshments from Coca-Cola.
