Become a Volunteer Today!

At Historic Savannah Foundation we would not be able to fulfill our advocacy, education and outreach mission without the support of our dedicated and hardworking volunteers. Opportunities to get involved include program support, community clean up, office assistance, working with students in our Hands on History Camp, or volunteering for one of our many Special Events. Date/Event Time

Camp Dates: May 29th – June 2nd
Time: 7:45 AM – 2:15 PM
Location: various historic sites and venues
Open to students ages 11-15

Location

The camp will be headquartered out of HSF’s Kennedy Pharmacy building, located at 323 E. Broughton Street, however we will be visiting many sites throughout the week.

Description

HSF’s Hands on History Camp is an interactive day-camp offered each summer, geared towards giving students an overview of the field of historic preservation and rehabilitation through a series of lectures and tours while providing hands-on experience through various practical workshops. This program provides a look at the world of history, preservation and site interpretation at several historic sites in and around Savannah. From the Tybee Island Light Station to Savannah’s Landmark District; subtle messages of conservation, stewardship and repurposing underlie the training. Though the camp, students learn basic architectural periods, styles and features as well as urban planning concepts—both traditional and new.

In addition, students gain knowledge about some of Savannah’s early historical figures and their contributions to our community. This camp represents the best of young adult learning techniques: a hands-on approach for teaching the importance of history, understanding and appreciating their environment, and seeing the positive impacts of historic preservation in their community.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteers are needed to act as chaperones, guides and camp counselors. Duties will involve:

  • Assisting with Architectural walking tours and Scavenger Hunts
  • General supervision and guidance while campers are participating in activities

Volunteers are not required to be available for all five days of camp and can identify which days they are available to volunteer.
